St. Basil the Great and the Creation of a Christian Hellenism

The world of Late Antiquity, the period between 200-600 AD, was a remarkable time for the synthesis of Christianity and Hellenism. Basil the Great, the fourth-century bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, is arguably one of the most significant figures who contributed to the creation of a Christian Hellenism during this period. St. Basil's life and writings exemplify how a Christian living in a world filled with spectacular cultural achievements is able to respond to the universal challenges of the human predicament with sensitivity to one's social and cultural location while remaining faithful to the Judeo-Christian religious heritage. Educated at the elite Academy of Athens and born into a well-connected family, Basil's journey through life, strength of character, and deep faith provides a paradigm for all Christians seeking a meaningful engagement with the world in which they live.

The lecture will be in English.
