AHEPA Chapter #31 of Washington, DC Presents
POLIS A Musical Tribute to the Fall of Constantinople In Cooperation with The School of Byzantine Music featuring
The Byzantine Choir of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America
Friday, May 10, 2024
Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral POLIS, The Queen of Cities is a Byzantine Music concert that celebrates the founding of the city of Constantinople (May 11, 330), the first Christian capital of the first Christian, and longest lasting, empire in the history of the world. The Eastern Roman Empire. This “Romaic” Greece or Romiosyne represents the continuation and dissemination of Hellenism throughout the western and middle eastern worlds, thus influencing innumerable empires and civilizations. In this concert: We pay tribute to the fallen men, women, and children massacred during the Pontian and Armenian genocides, which began on May 19, 1922, and whose tragic commemoration coincides this year with AHEPA Day, 2024. We lament the «αποφράς ημέρα», the “unspeakable day,” May 29, 1453, when Constantinople, the Queen of Cities, fell to the Ottoman Turks. We honor our spiritual father, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, in commemorating May 11, 2019, the date of his election by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople as the next Archbishop of America, and whose 5-year anniversary is this year. We commemorate the immortal founders and benefactors of Saint Sophia Cathedral, Washington, DC, the crown jewel of Byzantium in our nation's capital. Tickets
