The Daily Gyro
Updated Daily on Greek Time

March 25, 2005

  • Today is Greek Independence Day, which dates back to 1821. Closer to home, in 1634, Maryland was founded by English settlers sent by the second Lord Baltimore. Is there any wonder why Maryland has been the home to so many prominent Greeks throughout the years?

  • Greek prison guards went on strike yesterday over the fact that they are using still guns from the early 20th century. Used by the U.S. Cavalry in 1911, these guns were just the start of a trend of the U.S. exporting outdated shooters to Greece. (See washed up NBA starts playing in the Greek National League.)

  •  Earlier this week, the European Space Agency welcomed Greece as its newest member. Now we’re just one step closer to having Greeks preaching to Martians on how when they were living in caves, Greeks were perfecting interplanetary space travel.  Greeks we'd like to send to space:

    • Disgraced sprinters, Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou (whose careers were ended this week by a Greek sports authority)

    • Constantine Maroulis (from this season’s American Idol)

    • John Stamos (whose new show Jake in Progress, was on for two straight hours last night as alternate programming to the NCAA tournament. The premise alone seems like it would hit too close to home for a lot of Greek guys.)

  • A Spanish commission is studying ending the traditional siesta for its detrimental effects on productivity, career advancement for working moms, performance in school, and stability in marriages. Supporters of the change cite the latest productivity studies that rank Spain 13th among the original 15 EU countries, with only Greece and Portugal, two other nap grabbers, trailing in 2003. If lack of productivity leads to berths in the European Soccer Championship Finals, then we see no need to make a change.

  • Three years ago this weekend was the infamous Battle of the Greek Nights, two Greek Nights on the same night within blocks of each other in DC. While there is only one Greek Night tonight in DC, it faces perhaps a bigger challenge -- four NCAA tournament games featuring three ACC teams, including #1 seed North Carolina tipping off at 10:00 P.M. We predict a rush of guys after 12:30. Girls, if you want to be noticed on a night like this, we suggest sporting a Carolina blue top.
