The Daily Gyro
Updated Daily on Greek Time

July 13, 2005

  • With complaints of Greece having spent way too much money on last year’s Olympics that left them with an overabundance of sports facilities, a new plan emerged Monday. To earn the right to host the 2012 European Soccer Championship, Greece plans to spend about 138 million dollars to renovate six stadiums and build two additional stadiums in the teaming metropolises of Ioannina and Larissa. (Thankfully these two will be privately funded.) Only two of the stadiums, Olympic Stadium in Athens and Karaiskaki Stadium in Piraeus are deemed to be ready for the tournament. Other countries looking to host the tournament are Azerbaijan, Italy, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and combo bids from Croatia/Hungary and Poland/Ukraine. (How disappointing would it be to offer to spend $138 million dollars and lose to two countries at once?)

  • Three British streakers were jailed on Zakynthos this week for protesting a 15-month jail term of another British kid who was jailed for indecent exposure over the weekend. Officials on Zakynthos have sworn to crack down on British rowdiness. They should also look to crack down on British stupidity because anyone who has been to Zakynthos during the summer knows that with the ice-cold ocean in the afternoon and the mosquitoes in the evening, going naked isn’t really the smartest way to go.

  • Greece and 10 other countries were warned by the European Union to reduce noise pollution in their most crowded cities by 2012. These countries have two months to draw up maps identifying noise pollution hot spots and to provide plans to reduce noise from cars, aircraft, machinery and other sources (in Greece’s case -- donkeys, roosters, watermelon vendors, etc.) The other countries tagged by the EU were Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal and Britain. Luxembourg? That doesn’t sound like a very loud place.

  • Readers of Travel and Leisure magazine have voted on this year’s top islands in the world with Bali coming in first, and Santorini coming in second. Interestingly enough, the Cyclades as a chain even without Santorini came in seventh, besting Hawaii. Were wondering if the judges were allowed to throw out the islands in the chain that no one visits and just take the average of Paros, Mykonos, and maybe Ios.
