The Daily Gyro
Updated Daily on Greek Time

October 17, 2005

It’s encouraging to see that at least Greece took care of business on its end by beating Georgia on Wednesday even though it failed to ultimately make the World Cup because of the outcomes of the other games in its group. Surprisingly, Greek fans in Greece thanked their team for the ride since last summer’s improbable run to the Euro 2004 Championship. This won’t be the last we’ll hear of Greek soccer, just the last we’ll be talking about it here for a while.

We promised most of you details of the scavenger hunt for YAL Weekend sometime this week. We’ll start providing sneak previews of the clues that will ultimately turn the obligatory sight-seeing break from the drinking and partying that normally accompanies any YAL Weekend upside down. Starting from the hotel at Metro Center, teams of five or six (depending on how many of y’all sign up) will be given four hours to race around DC by Metro, walking, and any other means necessary, to collect pictures of everyone in the group in front of some famous and not-so-famous landmarks and other sights in DC. (You know if it’s us providing the clues and assigning point values, this won’t be your typical sight-seeing tour.) And since this really boils down to a bunch of Greeks in competition with each other for a prize to be named later and awarded at the Saturday afternoon happy hour at Shelley’s, cheating and other Odysseussian means will not be penalized.

Here's today's Gyro...

  • The name dispute surrounding FYROM has taken a new twist with a reported proposal by a UN mediator that would force Greece to change the name of the province of Macedonia. The new name could be anything from “Greek province Macedonia” to the absurd “North-Greek part of Macedonia” to the absolutely ridiculous “North Greek province of Macedonia.” We're surprised that “South-Greek part of Macedonia,” hasn't been suggested, considering it’s below FYROM on the map.

  • Apparently actresses and other celebrities don’t date rockstars or athletes anymore. Stavros Niarchos, another Greek shipping heir, is now linked to Paris Hilton, fresh off her break up with Paris Latsis. Apparently Niarchos was with one of the Olsen Twins before Hilton. Oh yeah, and this guy’s supposedly worth 7.5 billion, even more than Latsis.

  • Returning to YAL DC Weekend, as of this morning, we’ve got some stats to share from those who have registered online:
