The Daily Gyro
Updated Daily on Greek Time

April 8, 2005

  • The organizers of Third Thursday (who aren’t us, by the way) are offering the first-ever chance for the young adults in the area to vote on the location of this month’s event. This is just what’s needed to help an event that has been hurt this year by the calendar itself. With Third Thursday having fallen on Inauguration Day in January and St. Patrick’s Day in March, we’re looking for warmer weather and the lack of party holidays on Thursdays to give people no excuse but to come back to Third Thursday.

By sending emails to [email protected] between now and Monday, April 11th, with the name of place in the subject of the email, and your reasoning in the body, you may just be the person we all thank or complain about if the event is good or not.

According to the organizers, the location should be:

    • Metro Accessible

    • Without cover-charge (or at least before 9 pm)

    • Have nearby parking

    • Food is a plus

    • Not so loud that you can’t talk

According to us, the location should be:

    • In Ballston

    • A place where you can get a gin and tonic for less than $8 dollars.

    • A place where you wouldn’t look like a tool sporting a camera. (It’s been ages since we’ve whipped it out at a Third Thursday. We’re hurting for content, people! What do you think the motivation behind this lame three-day a week column was?)

    • A place where you’d run into a Greek-American who didn’t set out to stumble upon a Greek event in the first place.

    • A place with outdoor seating where you can see the above-mentioned Greeks who didn’t set out to stumble upon a Greek event, and call them out.

  • Speaking about Greeks in the area that you typically don’t see out and about, there’s about 150 guys across 16 teams who play basketball at St. Katherine’s on Sunday afternoons. After 10 long weeks, the first round of Greek League Playoffs start this Sunday at 2:00 P.M. and runs until 10:00 P.M. Check out our Events Calendar for a schedule of the games, or if you want the unfiltered experience you can go to Greekleague.com. It amazes even us that this league is now in its eighth season and there’s still a lot of Greeks in the area who haven’t heard about it. If you’re in the area on Sunday, stop by St. Katherine’s and watch a game or two, catch up/taunt a few friends you grew up with, buy a hotdog from the GOYA kids running the concession stand, and cheer on some underdogs.
