While fans of Greek letters on things other than fraternity or sorority houses
have the bittersweet privilege of seeing the first two tropical weather systems
named Alpha and Beta form in an insanely busy hurricane season, Greece recently
made its mark on world news with a scare over avian flu. Lovers of the a
delicious Chios turkey club were overjoyed to discover that tests came back
negative on the bird that saw an immediate decrease in both Greek consumption
and exportation of poultry over the last few weeks.
-
While Greeks were laying off the chicken, they were piling on the pork in
Patras last week, as Costas Dasios roasted a 4079 pound gyro kebab on a 5-foot
skewer besting the previous Guinness Book record made in Limassol, Cyprus back
in 2001 by almost 700 pounds.

On Friday, Greeks celebrated Oxi Day, while on Saturday night, Greek-Americans
in DC and probably elsewhere celebrated at an Oxi Day Greek Night, and a
surprising number of them probably didn’t know exactly what they were
celebrating, which put them only slightly ahead of the random Halloween
partiers who happened to stumble upon the festivities. (Oxi Day is like Cinco
De Mayo in that way.)
Not much else to report in this Gyro. Look for a rare Friday issue this week if
for nothing else, a briefing on Thursday night’s YAL DC Weekend 2005 turnout.
