The
Daily Gyro January 9, 2006 A Weekend of Earthquakes and Hurricanes On Sunday, an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale struck in the middle of the afternoon about 125 miles south of Athens in the Sea of Crete. Fortunately there were only three reported minor injuries on Crete to go along with some property damage, nothing like the 143 dead and thousands injured in the 1999 earthquake near Athens that weighed in at 5.9. On Saturday, Patriarch Bartholomew continued his U.S. visit with a service in New Orleans to pray for the victims of last summer’s Hurricane Katrina. His visit to the city was even more meaningful in that New Orleans is the site of the first Greek Orthodox community in the United States. About a quarter of the Orthodox community in the New Orleans area lost their homes to the hurricane. It’s a statement about the reach of the Greek diaspora in how two natural disasters, one in Greece, the other in the United States, can affect more Greek families here half way across the world than in Greece’s own backyard.
