Daily Gyro August 28, 2008 Greek-Americans Produce Pro-Obama Music Video "Unite the Nation" mixes Rap and Old-School Greek Tune In keeping with the unintended trend of this week, we spotlight a Greek-American produced pro-Obama music video that comes to us from just up the road in Baltimore. The at times infectious “Unite the Nation” samples an old Greek song from the late 60s/early 70s (this according to the Mom @ DCGreeks.com) and tries to appeal to every voting demographic in the Greek-American community. The middle-aged man bouzouki solo in the middle of the song, playing over a clip of Obama reflecting on the positive qualities of the Greek-American community, is completely unexpected given the otherwise youthful look and feel of the piece. The most profound part of the video is a rapid-fire Greek rap that includes a knock on the current administration’s backhanded treatment of Greece on the Macedonia issue. It’s a part of the song which is so full of valid points that some are lost in the delivery (particularly among the young adults in the community who may not speak Greek). Unfortunately the limited portions of the song that are actually in English do not mention any Greek-American issues or even allude to the fact that this was produced by Greek-Americans for Greek-American consumption. Overall though, it’s a well-produced video that is sure to circulate across Greek-America. Tonight’s Greek-Themed Viewing Note: Obama to accept Presidential nomination in front of a mock Greek Temple. (10:00 P.M. Eastern.) Other Servings of The Daily Gyro
